James Wusterbarth, an independent contractor in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, has led a life marked by an unwavering commitment to service, a relentless pursuit of knowledge, and a broad spectrum of professional experiences. His journey has been extraordinary, from his beginnings as a U.S. Naval Officer to his current work as an NGO international contractor.
Early Inspirations and Diverse Beginnings
His story begins in Heidelberg, Germany, where he was born, and the seeds of his future endeavors were planted. His initial professional steps were taken in Washington, D.C., during the 1990s at the Center for Counterterrorism Studies. This period of his life was crucial, as it set the foundation for his commission as a U.S. Naval Officer, a position that he embraced with zeal and dedication.
Dedication to National Service
As an OCS graduate, he faced the most challenging training program in the military: Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL training. His successful completion of the notoriously grueling Hellweek, showcased his resilience and determination. He was not given the opportunity to continue in the Special Warfare Community, but his efforts were noticed. The Navy offered James a chance to undergo pilot training. He deployed throughout the Mediterranean and participated in Operation Enduring Freedom. Throughout his tenure, he earned commendations from superiors and colleagues, solidifying his reputation as a committed leader and highly adaptable officer.
A Lifelong Pursuit of Knowledge and Skill
His thirst for learning and skill acquisition post-military service led him to acquire multiple FAA Pilot Licenses, a DOT Merchant Mariner Master Captain's License, boating instructor licenses, and a PADI Master Diver certification. His passions were not confined to aviation and marine activities; he also amassed over 35 years of experience as an emergency responder. James Wusterbarth's credentials include FLETC trained Federal Law Enforcement Ranger, USPA Certified Skydiver, National Ski Patrol, Red Cross Certified Lifeguard (Instructor), National Registry Certified EMT, ICS Search And Rescue Coordinator, and FEMA SAR Manager.
His commitment to service was profoundly evident in the aftermath of 9/11 when he took emergency leave and traveled to Ground Zero to assist in the cleanup effort under hazardous conditions. This selfless act is just one of the many examples of the thousands of voluntary service hours he has dedicated to emergencies across the globe. James has worked in 34 countries, and he has lived or traveled in over 50, demonstrating his global commitment to service.
Philanthropy and Advocacy at Home
James has been a tireless advocate and volunteer in the United States for numerous LGBTQ, Hospice, and women's charities. Hi's efforts also include fundraising for women's shelter initiatives. His dedication to gender equality and support during critical times culminated in his being the only male to ever be awarded the 'Women at Ground Zero Scholarship,' a unique honor that reflects his unwavering commitment to promoting equality.
Educator and Broadcaster
His deep understanding of the human body and passion for education led him to a prestigious teaching role at Johns Hopkins Medical School, where he spent two years imparting knowledge to the next generation of world class physicians. Following this, he transitioned to live broadcasting, becoming the FOX5 On-Air Health, Fitness, and Nutrition Editor. For five years, James Wusterbarth reached an audience of more than 200,000 viewers with each broadcast, educating them on crucial health and wellness topics.
Advocacy Through Federal Law Enforcement and International Engagement
His career has been marked by exceptional adaptability and a willingness to go wherever he is needed the most. After losing a relative to gun violence, he returned to government service, this time in federal law enforcement. His work took him to all four corners of the United States, building cases against violent criminals, white power groups, street gangs, wildlife poachers, domestic ISIS/ISIL terrorists, and maritime cartel smugglers.
After a decade of service in federal law enforcement, his career took an international turn, first into to the Eastern Congo and along the volatile borders of the Ukraine, Syria, and the North Korean DMZ, then back to the Middle East twenty years after his military deployment to the region. Now an independent contractor, he continues using his extensive knowledge and experience to make a difference where needed most.
Commitment to Refugee Support
His strong passion for helping refugees stems from his father’s years of refugee work, and the subsequent childhood experiences James was privileged to encounter being brought along to welcome and play with traumatized Cambodian Genocide survivor children. Many were orphans with no surviving family members, and in some cases they witnessed their parents being murdered in front of them. These ‘Welcome to America playdates’ were facilitated by his father’s work with their caretakers, helping set them up with safe and stable lives in their new homes. It all had a lasting impact on James, fostering his lifelong commitment to supporting refugees in their journeys to new lives.
Balancing Professional and Personal Commitments
Outside of his professional commitments, James Wusterbarth is deeply devoted to his family, actively participating in the daily responsibilities of raising four children. His interests in health, nutrition, and fitness reflect his commitment to a balanced, healthy lifestyle.
A Life Defined by Service and Continuous Learning
His life is a testament to the power of dedication, service, and the pursuit of knowledge. His career has spanned various fields, from military service and emergency response to education, broadcasting, and international contracting. Throughout his journey, he has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to making a difference, whether on a global scale or in local communities.
His extensive charitable work and dedication to education and public service reflect his deep belief in giving back and making a positive impact. As he continues to pursue his passions and contribute to causes close to his heart, he stands as a role model and inspiration, proving that a life dedicated to service, learning, and personal growth can lead to a fulfilling and impactful existence.
He has left an indelible mark in every role he has undertaken, demonstrating the profound difference one can make when driven by commitment, passion, and a genuine desire to contribute to the greater good.
